Even though he is the challenger and a putatively popular incumbent is running for re-election, Mike Feuer appears to hold the stronger position for the May 21 runoff for Los Angeles City Attorney.

By all yardsticks – polls and last month’s 14-point primary victory – Mr. Feuer commands a hefty double-digit lead over Carmen Trutanich. This may explain the stepped-up slingshots against him by the Trutanich campaign, charging a serious of ethics violations.

Their next face-to-face debate is this evening in Studio City.

For Mr. Feuer, this morning’s question was:

Since he is packing the momentum, would he respond to Mr. Trutanich’s wall of accusations?

At first, he demurred. Not for long.

“Look,” Mr. Feuer said, “Trutanich has a long history of failing to tell the truth, and a long history with frivolous litigation.

“This is no different.

“The voters of the city want us to focus on the issues that count for them.

“They want us to focus on making their neighborhoods safer by restoring the neighborhood prosecutor program,” an electric plank of Mr. Feuer’s platform.

“They want us to focus on making areas around schools safer for their kids.

“They want to restore the city’s efforts against gang violence.

“They want to make sure we are reducing litigation costs by eliminating chaos in lawsuits, by preventing lawsuits in the first place.

“These are the issues people care about.

“Mr. Trutanich lost the primary by 14 points, and the most recent poll said he is 18 points down.

“It is no wonder to me,” Mr. Feuer said, “that he and his allies are going to try and drag this campaign into the mud.

“I think he thinks this is his only chance to win.”

Undoubtedly, Mr. Feuer said, this is what has motivated his recent blizzard of charges.

“He is desperate,” the challenger believes.
