Re “Leader of L.A. Jews for Peace Ready for Rally Friday”

Sometimes Jeff Warner of La Habra, a stern Jewish critic of Israel in wartime and in peace, walks almost daintily. Other times, he strides stridently, as when reflecting on who lit the match in the present Israel-Hamas conflict.

“There was sort of a truth,” Mr. Warner ventures, in faulting rockets from Gaza for sparking the war, but…

“There was sort of a truth…there were very few rockets, none from Hamas, some from these other groups,  and Israel sort of started it.

“Israel not only started the war, Israel instigated it with the way they conducted the hunt for the abductors (killers) of the three Israeli teens kidnapped in June.”

Mr. Warner, a leader of L.A. Jews for Peace who has been in the front row of demonstrations at the Israeli Consulate, charged the Israel overreacted to the abductions the same way, he says, they are overreacting in the Gaza war.

“Israel arrested 500 Hamas supporters, and they started bombing Gaza,” he said. “They started bombing Gaza the day after the kids were abducted or went missing.

“Hamas fell into their trap, and they responded. By responding, that gave (Prime Minister Bibi) Netanyahu and the Israelis an excuse. They said, ‘They’re shooting rockets at us. We’ve got to hit them hard.’

“That,” concluded Mr. Warner, “is how the war started.”
