Re “For Voncannon, Christmas Is About Giving, Too”

Growing up in Winston-Salem, NC, was Christmas your favorite holiday?

“Yes, absolutely. Obviously, as a child, presents come before anything else.

“As you become a little bit older and have a more adult attitude, it’s family and friends, the relationships with them, and the opportunity to renew all of that.”

Do you still exchange gifts today?

“Certainly, within our family and with close friends,” said Mr. Voncannon, a committed Christian.

Returning to his earlier values-laden portrait of Christmastime, he said the gift exchanges provide “a symbol of the spirit of giving at this season of the year.

“We don’t exchange large gifts, but they don’t need to be. In the spirit of giving, it is more of a remembrance of friendships and relationships than it is anything else.”
