Re “On Way Out, Pearson Waves a Hearty Thanks to Parents”

Jon Pearson is one of those unusual school administrators whose legacy – now that he is gone – will be at least as much parent-centric as student oriented.

Oh, he was popular enough with students, and that is not such an unusual trait.

But from his first week, Mr. Pearson sensitively, electrically connected with moms and dads.

Describing his seven years at the Culver City Middle School, as assistant principal and then principal, Mr. Pearson, who left a month ago for the Torrance School District, made his old job sound so easy.

“It has been just opening the doors and really encouraging parents to get involved,” he said. “We know parent involvement does improve a school’s ability to serve children.”

A native of the Washington, D.C./Northern Virginia area, Mr. Pearson permanently moved to the West Coast directly after earning a bachelor’s in biology.

He came to education for the most rudimentary of reasons, “a desire to make a difference in the lives of kids.”

Such a purity of motivation arose from the most desirable of backgrounds. “I was blessed with a great childhood and wonderful parents,” said Mr. Pearson, a happy but seldom heard assessment in these times.
