Re “Who Should Evaluate Teachers? Goldberg Speaks up”
On the matter of who should evaluate the classroom performance of teachers, Nancy Goldberg, who retired from the Culver City High School faculty, said it is mandatory that the professional observer know the material.
Ms. Goldberg, in her third year on the School Board, recalled an incident at the height of her 41-year career that was unfunny then and now.
“One time I got a baseball coach to evaluate me when I was teaching advanced rhetoric,” she said.
“It was kind of implausible.”
Three seasons into the non-teaching section of her life, Ms. Goldberg said the education world looks very different to her from this side.
“Lord, yes,” she said. “You suddenly realize all the other contributions that are made to the schools other than the faculty, the staff, the classified employees.
“Suddenly you see how much parents put in, how much volunteerism goes on, how much general consciousness of need exists in the community.”
Ms. Goldberg also will be involved in the daily Summer Lunch and Learn program at LaBallona Elementary for the first time.
