A cynic, speaking through the southeast corner of his mouth, would say the Teachers Union learned its lesson from last week’s miscalculated election mailer that belched smoke and backfired like a cheap, ripped-off Porsche, scorching the union’s face.
An old-fashioned hometown hurricane erupted.
There was heck to pay when a mailer to voters in the School Board election, signed by the president of the union, failed to include one of the Teachers Union’s three endorsees, banker Vernon Taylor.
Recipients were not supposed to know this, but the mailing was paid for by the County Federation of Labor, which, incidentally, refused to endorse Mr. Taylor.
In an effort to mend fences and wounded feelings with voters after the colossal screw-up, the Teachers Union, ahem, decided this week to treat the formerly snubbed Mr. Taylor like a snub-proof prodigal son.
His name and image are everywhere.
Kissing and making up is the rage on this gorgeous afternoon.
As the suspense nears a climax for Tuesday’s seven-way election for three School Board seats, the Teachers Union now has dispatched to Culver City voters what amounts to a Taylor Valentine.
Not only is he listed first in the headline at the top of the group photo, you will notice that in the bottom set, Mr. Taylor also is No. 1.
“Nothing but the best for our guy,” was the Teachers Union’s message to voters.
However, a day without orange juice is not a day without a faux pas.
Did the Teachers Union commit another slightly subtle gaffe?
A mother asked the newspaper this afternoon: “Wouldn’t you think that the Culver City Teachers Union would use a picture of Culver City teachers, not a stock shot that might be of teachers – or truck drivers – from Luxembourg or Bulgaria?”
With a sly wink, she added:
“Wonder if the guys in that shot that may be from Google are unionized?”
