Re “Why Mandell Pressed to Correct Salary Error”

Even though Culver City’s Boulevard Music Summer Festival, which resumes tomorrow evening at 7 in the Courtyard of City Hall, isn’t quite as elaborate (in length) as a few years ago, it is more popular than ever with the business community.

As Week Two arrives with a touch of Paris (Jessica Fichot and French Chasons) and a flavor of Buenos Aires (Los Pinguos/Argentine acoustic rock), producer Gary Mandell has lined up a record field of sponsors.

He doesn’t want anyone to think he is going to make a down payment on a Caribbean island with his earnings from the six-week series.

Last year he netted $5900.

In his 14th year, conversations with Mr. Mandell often turn to the tentativeness of his standing with City Hall.

“I go one year at a time,” he said. “We have not negotiated next year’s contract. (City Councilman) Jim Clarke said he would talk to me about it.”

Mr. Mandell added: “I would prefer not to get a contract where changes are made in the terms without discussing them with me.”

The personality of the Summer Music Festival is supposed to change dramatically once Parcel B – on the drawing board since shortly before George Washington’s second inauguration – is built. No one is holding his breath for fear of dying.

The understanding seems to be that City Hall’s always bumpy relationship with Mr. Mandell will continue as long as the Thursday evening concerts are staged in the Courtyard.
