Re “How the Council’s Vote Narrowed Karagozian’s Options”

Michael Karagozian, owner of the closed Culver City Ice Arena and surrounding land, was steamed about last week’s vote by the City Council because he said it handcuffs him.

In the name of historical preservation, the Council approved the middle of three rankings, which carried with it binding restrictions.

While his choices may be limited, he has ideas.

The vote, said Mr. Karagozian, “takes a piece of property to where if something real good is put on there, it is going to serve a way larger segment of the community.

“It’s going to increase sales tax revenue, if it’s retail. Let’s assume it’s a retail place. It’s going to make the whole boulevard, all the way from Culver on the north down to Jefferson, everything, better.”

Employing subtlety, Mr. Karagozian sure sounded as if he was was saying the ice rink is history.

“Developing that property,” he said, “either putting up a new building there or fixing the old building – and I don’t know how you are going to fix it – it’s going to improve everything.”
