[img]1805|right|Kathy Paspalis||no_popup[/img]Having no stomach to pursue a re-run of last summer’s turbulence when the School Board bitterly voted 3 to 2 to kill, or delay, the bond measure campaign, the School District is not taking any chances with the second round of the Are You Ready for a Bond? drill.
Three committees – comprised of one or two Board members and a selection of community members – have been formed to create a bridge between the policy makers and the policy wishers regarding the next try at putting a bond on a ballot next year.
Supt. Dave LaRose’s goal:
To keep lay people as informed and involved as the professional school leaders.
Just before this evening’s 7 o’clock School Board meeting at School District headquarters, the Facts, Finances and Timelines Committee – led by Karlo Silbiger and Prof. Patricia Siever – will convene an opening meeting in the same room, starting at 4:45.
Friday morning at 8, the Education and Engagement Committee – led by Laura Chardiet –will hold an open meeting in the same setting. .
The Master Facility Planning/Next Steps Committee – led by Kathy Paspalis and Nancy Goldberg – huddled last week.
Asst. Supt. Mike Reynolds said this morning that the sub-groups were formed “to keep the community fully informed.”
[img]1789|left|Karlo Silbiger||no_popup[/img]Practically everyone who lives in or drives through Culver City said he was caught flatfooted last July 1 when Mr. Silbiger, unbeknownst to colleagues, read a well-prepared 950-word document, detailing why the bond campaign should be temporarily shut down, pending further research.
An irony lies in the implied optimism of certain Board members.
Technically, it is possible – not likely – that three of the five will be gone by the time next year’s School Board votes on the specifics of a bond campaign.
Mr. Silbiger and Ms. Paspalis are running for re-election.
Prof. Siever declined to run, and her term will expire before pivotal decisions are rendered.
