Smoking in Apartments Is About to Go Up in Smoke

At Monday evening’s 7 o’clock City Council meeting, it is expected to become official that smoking is prohibited in multi-unit buildings in Culver City.

The funnest part of this ordinance may be the amateur enforcement – although that will hinge on whether you are the catcher or the catchee.

Not only does City Hall ostensibly lack the womanpower and manpower to sniff around private property, something does not feel right to the city about telling its gendarmes to spend their whole shifts walking about in inhale mode.

The city calls the newest form of enforcement “private,” which is one way of describing a neighbor tattling on his fellow tenant. They probably will be don’t-invite-‘ems at the next block party.

Given the present thorny status of the parking-space dispute between Grace Lutheran Church and the denizens of the 10700 block of Farragut Drive, predicting Council Chambers’ outcomes outcomes is hazardous.

But days before the Monday gong rings, it appears that public sentiment will tip in favor of the ban.
