Time for one final puff if you live in a Culver City apartment.

Okay, two.

No more.

Four-fifths of the City Council agreed last evening to tentatively embrace a proposal that would ban smoking in all forms of multi-family housing, two units or more.

They directed staff to return in a few weeks with a precise ordinance that would prohibit smoking in the numerous forms of apartments and condos. Only Councilman Jeff Cooper demurred. He said such a ban constituted overreach by the city.

E-cigarettes, the rage in some communities, was accorded a considerably cooler reception.

Councilmembers agreed not to act because the data was too muddied – it was limited, conclusions were conflicting, they said.

The truth about e-cigarettes remains veiled in mystery.

Councilman Jim Clarke pressed Mayor Meghan Sahli Wells on her position on e-cigarettes.

Why, he asked, was she opposed to fracking when its perils are unknown but in favor of e-cigarettes when its dangers are unknown.

The mayor said her research demonstrates the fracking is dangerous.
