A City Hall source reported this morning that one Nadine Lewis of Pacific Palisades “is going to sue the city to get a restraining order to prohibit us from exercising our police powers to protect the safety of the public.”

This threatened action, promised at last night’s City Council meeting, is related to the Fire Dept.’s order to operators of the Culver City Ice Arena that the ammonia within must be cleaned out immediately, throwing proposed plans for the arena into a quandary.

How is that going to be explained to the non-skating community? the source said.

“What kind of a bond does one get to protect the public in the event of a catastrophic breach, should the existing crumbling refrigeration system fail?

“How do you bond against an environmental or health disaster?”

The source wondered if residents remembered the spectacular, days’ long hillside slide in Culver Crest nearly a decade ago?

It was suggested at the time that the city knew the hill was unstable but didn't do enough ahead of time to protect the public.

“Knowing what the city now knows about the lack of integrity of the existing system, how does the city responsibly sit back and do nothing?” the baffled source added.
