Two respected environmental groups, the Sierra Club and the Los Angeles League of Conservation Voters, this week declared their support for Andy Weissman, the most experienced City Council candidate in a nine-person field for the April 8 election.

Each cited Mr. Weissman’s commitment to the environment and his advocacy of green building standards in supporting his candidacy.

“We need to take seriously our role as a city in reducing our environmental footprint,” he said, “when it comes to everything from recycling and reusing waste to requiring buildings to be built to the highest environmental standards.”

Mr. Weissman’s environmental platform includes:

• Establishing landscaping guidelines and tree programs for new development.

Expanding natural drainage systems to replenish underground water supplies.

Creating standards for new construction to reduce surface runoff, create swales and watershed, and increase utilization of sustainable materials.

“I am proud of my environmental record on the Planning Commission, ” Mr. Weissman said.

The Sierra Club, founded in 1892 by John Muir, has played a key role in a wide array of environmental efforts, including protection of more than 132 million acres in America’s national park and wilderness areas. The Sierra Club’s theme, unchanged since the days of Mr. Muir, reads: “To explore, enjoy, and protect the wild places of the earth, to practice and promote the responsible use of the earth’s ecosystems and resources, to educate and enlist humanity to protect and restore the quality of the natural and human environment, and to use all lawful means to carry out these objectives.”

The Los Angeles League of Conservation Voters was formed in 1976. The mission of the only environmental political action committee in the County is to participate in the electoral process throughout the County from an environmental perspective by endorsing and helping elect candidates who will conserve natural resources and protect and promote a healthful environment.
