With the Tuesday, June 3 primary just 12 days away, state Assemblymember Sebastian Ridley-Thomas (D-Culver City-Crenshaw) has been nearly as active in his 54th District as he has been busy in the state capitol. His prime focus in Sacramento has been preparing for state budget deliberations and managing his Assembly Committee assignments.

He authored a package of bills, one of which captured media attention for its impact on proving more access to birth records to adult adoptees and emancipated foster youth. He has given a lot of time and attention to his bill to fund early childhood education programs, preschool and pre-K.

He supported Gov. Brown’s “rainy day” fund proposal that voters will decide on the November ballot. He has taken time to confer with Culver City Chamber of Commerce members and honored Culver City High School performing arts students and teachers. He has been a regular fixture at West L.A. College to encourage student enrollment in the Affordable Care Act — known in this state as Covered California — and attended the college’s recent open house for high school students who will be graduating next month. He hasn’t devoted a considerable amount of time to his campaign for re-election beyond showing the voters that their confidence in his leadership capabilities was not misplaced when they elected him to represent them in the Assembly last Dec. 3.

Mr. Ridley-Thomas faces a Republican challenger in the primary a week from Tuesday. He is confident in the voters’ ability to evaluate the work he has performed during the past five months. He believes he has earned the voters’ support and he wants their votes. He urges voters to turn out on Election Day, or mail their ballots this week, to exercise their most important right as citizens.

School Bond Measure

Knowing the importance of a quality education to the future of our young people, Mr. Ridley-Thomas has strongly supported Measure CC on the Culver City Unified School District special election ballot. If approved by 55 percent of voters, Measure CC will provide bond funds to upgrade, repair and modernize classroom and school facilities. It will pay for high-tech learning labs and equipment for neighborhood schools throughout the School District. Mr. Ridley-Thomas knows that CCUSD’s reputation for quality education is one  reason families want to live in Culver City. He believes Measure CC will help CCUSD maintain its high standing among school districts in L.A. County.

While Assemblymember Ridley-Thomas has not campaigned for re-election to the extent he campaigned during his 2013 run for public office, he believes the following (in his own words):

“The best campaign is good service, growing economies, fostering a healthier business climate, promoting job growth, improving the opportunity for Californians to work their way into the middle class, keeping streets safe and clean, and maintaining the high standard of living in the 54th Assembly District.”
