Saturday is one of the favorite days of the year for County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas.

In the company of other elected officials in the Second District, Mr. Ridley-Thomas will host one of his most important and enduring creations, the 18th annual Empowerment Congress Summit, at Cal State, Dominguez Hills. The 5-hour event starts at 9 a.m. in the Student Union.

One reason the newest County Supervisor wanted to return to Los Angeles after serving in both chambers of the state legislature in Sacramento was to be back in the community every day instead of airmailing his sentiments.

In its plainest terms, the goal of the Empowerment Congress is to get people to pay attention to their government, to track developments and participate in the process.

“Our goal,” Mr. Ridley-Thomas said, “is to increase community participation and make government more inclusive and responsive.”

The theme of Saturday’s event is: “We are the Second District: Educated, Engaged, and Empowered for Action.”

Representing the district will be residents and elected officials from the cities of Culver City, Carson, Compton, Gardena, Hawthorne, Inglewood, Lynwood, and unincorporated areas of Los Angeles.

The Empowerment Congress agenda is designed to inform residents on major provisions of the California budget and how services provided by the County of Los Angeles may be impacted.
