The joys of urban farming will descend on Downtown all day on Saturday when the first annual HomeGrown Culver City event celebrates backyard edible gardening, sustainable gardening and an ecological lifestyle.

The free food festival runs from 9 a.m.to 5 in Media Park, by the Ivy Substation. (http://www.homegrownculvercity.com/workshops/)

HomeGrown seeks to unite people and organizations dedicated to teaching and fostering organic gardening in an effort to strengthen the local community of urban farmers.

HomeGrown Culver City is entirely volunteer-organized. All proceeds will benefit the work of Beyond Shelter, a non-profit organization helping homeless families with children move into permanent housing and then providing services to help them rebuild their lives.

People of all skill levels interested in the organic gardening movement will find an array of hands-on workshops dedicated to various disciplines of backyard farming.

This family-friendly celebration brings together edible garden designers and specialists in the fields of composting, vermiculture, master gardeners, permaculture, bee keeping, backyard chickens and urban animal husbandry for a series of educational sessions and exhibits. Other participants include organic soil and fertilizer companies, edible plant growers, and seed companies. Several independent specialty vendors will also be on-site to serve delicious foods made with natural and local ingredients.

A special emphasis will be on children's free workshops, a child’s first garden, making a scarecrow from recycled materials and introducing them to the carbon footprint concept.

While HomeGrown Culver City is a free event, participants are encouraged to bring canned and/or packaged healthy food, as well as new children’s winter clothing items: jackets, sweatshirts or pajamas.
