The monthly habit of Saturday afternoon at the movies — films of special interest to purveyors of black entertainment history — is building into a tradition in Culver City.

At 4 o’clock on Saturday, the Mayme Clayton Library and Museum — on Overland Avenue, the site of the Old Courthouse, across the street from the Vets Auditorium — a 1933 film headlined by Paul Robeson, “Emperor Jones,” will be screened.
Based on the stage production by Broadway playwright Eugene O’Neill, Emperor Jones is the story of railroad porter Brutus Jones (Mr. Robeson), who gambles and commits murder. After being jailed, he manages to escape the chain gang by beating a prison guard and making his way to a remote island in the West Indies, where he rules as the emperor.
Besides Mr. Robeson, Emperor Joes, directed by Mr. O’Neill, also features Dudley Digges, Frank Wilson and Fredi Washington.
Next month’s Saturday at the Movies attraction will be on Oct. 30.
