Before the fun begins Friday night at 6 for Meghan Sahli-Wells’s two-tiered fundraiser in her campaign for the City Council, the community advocate has adopted a new passionate cause.
Healthcare benefits for elected officials probably have been the hottest political subject in Culver City the past 9 months.
Ms. Sahli-Wells has been an ardent listener and participant in many of the arguments.
She hinted at her unclouded stance in the first two Candidate Forums.
She believes they should end when the elected official leaves office, a formulation the School Board follows.
However, Ms. Sahli-Wells is running for one of the four seats on the City Council in the April 10 election, and City Hall’s policy is far more generous:
Serve a minimum of five years, and the person is covered for life.
Ms. Sahli-Wells advocates emulating the School Board’s example.
When she raised the subject two nights ago at the Culver Crest Candidates Forum, Councilman Andy Weissman, competing for a second term, indicated his agreement with Ms. Sahli-Wells.
The next step, though, is not yet clear.
Meanwhile, for Ms. Sahli-Wells’s second fundraiser of the month, tonight’s Downtown program will open with a 6 o’clock dinner at Ugo’s, on Cardiff Avenue, followed by a staging of George Orwell’s “1984” several hundred yards away at 8 at The Actor’s Gang.
