Steve Rose, one of Culver City’s most likeable personalities, took his most critical step this morning in a sudden political comeback.

Seeking a temporary appointment to the West Basin Water District Board, Mr. Rose interviewed at 11:30 at the Board’s offices on South Avalon in Carson with the Board president and another member.

A long-held water board seat opened last month when Ed Little retired, effective immediately, a half-year before the November election.

Mr. Rose says that he holds two major qualifications for the position, “my knowledge of government and my integrity.”

Mr. Rose said he was not nervous in the hours leading up to his suitability interview.

“There are only two questions,” he said. “Will they make an interim appointment and who will it be. Right now it looks as if they are, as long as they can get a majority to agree on one candidate.”
Selection of Mr. Rose likely would spring the water board into uncommon prominence because of his standing in the community.

Six years after being termed out on the City Council, the chief executive of the Chamber of Commerce told the newspaper this morning how he has been preparing to sit down with president Ron G. Smith and Gloria Gray.

“I have been studying West Basin’s website, their budget issues and policies. I have read all of their agendas and minutes.

“I also have been saying abreast of drought issues.

“The application asked for a letter of interest and your bio.”

Two of Mr. Rose’s rivals actively have been campaigning for the open seat, while he is relying on the assertedly spotless personal profile he has established in the last 30 years.
