As chair of the state Assembly Elections and Redistricting Committee, Assemblyman Sebastian Ridley-Thomas today announced he is joining with Sen. Ben Allen to host a special downtown Sacramento screening next Tuesday evening of “Selma,” the Oscar-nominated best picture candidate.

“‘Selma’ tells the dramatic story of Martin Luther King, Jr. and organizers of the 54-mile freedom march from Selma to Montgomery to secure voting rights for African Americans,” said Mr. Ridley-Thomas, a Democrat who represents Culver City and the Crenshaw District.

“In honor of Black History Month, it is important for all Americans to acknowledge the struggles, indignities, violence and death our forefathers endured that enable us to enjoy full voting rights.

“The right to vote is our most precious right as Americans,” he said. “Voting rights must be preserved. They must remain unimpeded in every city, county and state.”
