Re “Clarke Cites Three Insurmountable Hurdles for Rent Control”

With rent control in the air again on the City Council agenda a week from Monday, Vice Mayor Mehaul O’Leary flipped both of his thumbs onto the tabletop.

“The kind of rent control that Santa Monica traditionally has had is not what Culver City needs or wants,” he said.

Speaking of traditions, Mr. O’Leary attached a thought he commonly employs in sensitive situations: “I will be interested in hearing the discussion, though.”

The vice mayor does not see or expect any supporting groundswell.

“I know that possibly (Mayor Meghan Sahli-Wells) is championing this, but I am not even sure of that.”

Unlike some of his colleagues, Councilman Andy Weissman says he is not in the whether forecasting business.

“I have said before that the topic for our Dec. 8 meeting is a discussion about whether to have a discussion,” he said. “If there are three nodding heads to pursue, in some form, a discussion of rent control, something will take place in the future. If there aren’t, then it will all end on Dec. 8. That is my understanding.”
