Student athletes want a first-hand look, too.

A ceremonial Golden Shovel event was held at Culver City High School’s Helms Field yesterday afternoon to kick off the $4.85 million renovation project that includes a variety of long overdue and much needed upgrades to the track and field facility.

Present at the ceremony were School Board President Kathy Paspalis, Vice President Patricia Siever, and members Nancy Goldberg, Laura Chardiet and Karlo Silbiger.

From the School District were Supt. David LaRose and Asst. Supts. Mike Reynolds and Leslie Lockhart.

High School Principal Dylan Farris was prominent,too, along with  Asst. Principal of Athletics Jon Chapman and head coaches Jahmal Wright, Scott Mair, Casey Chabola and Olympia Jewett from football, girls soccer, boys lacrosse, and track and field, respectively.

The four-month project will include:

  • Demolition and grading.
  • Removal of ticket booth and concession stand.
  • Resurfacing of the track.
  • New synthetic turf field.
  • Scoreboard.
  • New field equipment.
  • New ADA access to field.
  •  Landscaping along Harter/St. Nicolas.
  • Miscellaneous landscaping repairs to the adjacent practice fields.

It is anticipated that the project will be completed by early September.
