Nine days before the two-month anniversary of Newtown, active, daily pursuit of student safety in Culver City public schools remains a blue ribbon topic for the School District.

This afternoon, Supt. Dave LaRose talks about findings in his first-person inspection of campuses.

What kind of information have campus walk-throughs yielded?

  • Our primary goals have been to include staff/administrators/community/law enforcement/city partners in the walk-throughs to assess the perimeter, review the access points and learn from those who “live” there what they see, hear, feel.
  • The overall feedback has been positive. With access being a common concern, our observations/assessments of gates and entry points have been a focus. Law enforcement has been particularly impressed. We can improve, certainly, and this includes our processes/protocols, not simply investments in gates/locks.
  • We have been intentional and thoughtful about engaging partners – those who share our space. This is particularly true with respect to El Rincon, where the campus itself also is a city park. Our walk-through at El Rincon included members from City Parks and Rec. Our principals are engaging their after-school partners to learn and align protocols (access points, communication plans).
  • Common enhancements include exterior lighting and communication systems, from exterior speakers to added radios to plans for additional videos.

Have you made unexpected discoveries?

  • Not unexpected, but affirmed: Procedures and protocols are a critical component. They are unique to each site. Perceptions differ at times as to what is a responsible safety measure and what is convenient/inconvenient. We need to consider ideas within the context of each school  to ensure that they will truly address a need and enhance safety – for example, engaging the site team on everything from office configuration to gate access. One discovery that has not been a surprise has been the collaborative approach that all parties have taken. We all share this interest/this goal and the high levels of trust and cooperation have been rewarding.

Will you continue the walk-throughs?

  • We see regular walk-throughs as a positive and pro-active strategy.

What precisely are you looking for?

  • Immediate needs, from gates/fencing/locks to broken/damaged equipment. We also are, as noted before, looking to gain a more personal perspective of the site. What works? What has been a concern? , What ideas already have been considered?
