Re “For Bixby, Summertime, and the Livin’ Is Easy”

Interim Police Chief Scott Bixby recently was talking about bringing the nine-short force back to a full complement of 105.

Between retirements and several “rare” lateral moves – officers who moved to new agencies for family reasons – the department was down, but…

“Our problem,” said Chief Bixby, “was that we had 216 applicants for our latest tests for police officer.

“When it was all said and done, after the orals were done and we got a list of possible candidates, we were down to maybe 28 – out of 216 people.”

What is so tough about the testing?

“Lots of people can’t make it through the agility tests, and probably 50 percent don’t pass the written phase,” said the chief.

“Some don’t even show up.

“Another 15 to 20 percent don’t pass the oral board, which consists of inside and outside people, sergeants and above who sit on the oral panel.

“Of the 28 or 30 we do get, we will be lucky to get eight or 10,” Mr. Bixby said, “because about half will wash out on background.”

So you thought it was easy to become a cop?
