When the City Council considered on Monday night whether to support the school bond known as Measure CC for the June 3 election, if you sneezed, even lightly, you missed the transitory discussion.
Only Mehaul O’Leary commented, lightly, briefly.
He said explicitly this afternoon that if the election were today, “absolutely” he would vote for the $106 million measure.
That was the important part.
Digging deeper, his feelings otherwise were rather ambivalent.
Do you have strong feelings about the bond issue? Mr. O’Leary was asked.
“With regard to the effect on individuals should it pass, not really,” the Councilman said.
“I am neither pro- nor anti-tax. If something sounds to me like the right way to go, and it makes sense, I am in favor of it.
“When the bond measure first was presented to me last year, when (the pro-bond side) did not have a majority on the School Board, it made sense to me then,” Mr. O’Leary said. “The schools had critical (repair and update) issues then. It seemed to me the only way they were going to get funding was through this measure.
“They presented it to the public, and now the public deserves the opportunity to vote on it.”
Although the community appears to heavily support Measure CC, what if the backing thins out as June 3 approaches?
“Then those who believe in the bond should get together, rally behind it, and make their point by marching to the polls,” said Mr. O’Leary, a Culver City resident for 20 years.
