To the delight of many and disappointment of none, Sylvia Moore, only technically the outgoing first vice president, was formally and finally and officially elected president of the Culver City Democratic Club last evening at the Vets Auditorium.
For nearly half a year, she has been acting in that position, succeeding to the top chair after the August death of president Lee Sanders.
Following a person who has died in office is a towering challenge for the most capable personality, and club members say Ms. Moore carried out her suddenly-thrust-upon duties with deftness and class.
Lest anyone think Ms. Moore is easy to replace as 1st veep, the person would be quite wrong.
Two candidates vied to succeed her.
However, because several ballots were invalid, the Democratic Club membership decided to take a re-vote at its next meeting in February.
The 1st VP position is currently vacant, and that is not all.
The post of correspondence secretary for 2015 also is pending. Members who held the 2nd VP, treasurer, membership and recording secretary chairs in 2014 have been reelected.
After a lively discussion among candidates for the Los Angeles Community College Board of Trustees, the Democratic Club endorsed:
Seat 1: Andra Hoffman
Seat 3: Sydney Kamlager
Seat 5: Scott Svonkin
Seat 7: Mike Fong
Afterward, Ms. Moore said:
“The CCDC thanks all the candidates who participated.
“However, the club membership believes that Ms. Hoffman, Ms. Kamlager, Board member Svonkin and Mr. Fong are the best candidates with the potential to advance the interests of students and faculty in the community college system.
“We urge all Democrats to turn out to the polls and support these endorsed candidates on March 3.”
