A 47-year tradition has been broken – temporarily.

The announcement this morning from Culver City Exchange Club President Bruce Popkin was frills-free and direct:
“Our Fourth of July fireworks show is canceled for this year due to refurbishing of the high school football field and stadium.”
The spring- and summer-long renovation of Helms Field is a centerpiece of the School District’s massive, four-part capital improvements projects.
“Because of the condition of the field, we won’t be able to handle the large crowd that we usually get,” said Mr. Popkin.
No options are available.
“No other place in the area is large enough to accommodate the fireworks show,” the president said.
The fireworks displays are expected to return next summer.
Mr. Popkin explained that the various sizes of fireworks shells require a matching amount of clear space. “A four-inch shell, for example, would require a 400-foot diameter for fallout,” he said.
However, the Car Show, another major annual fundraising promotion by the Exchange Club, will go off on schedule.
Featuring up to 500 classic cars, the 10th anniversary Car Show will be staged in Downtown in two weeks, on Saturday, May 11.
