Three weeks after a bar room showdown at closing time, remembered only because the fisticuffs involved City Councilman Mehaul O’Leary, charges have not been filed against his alleged aggressor.

The District Attorney may never file, sources told the newspaper today.

“The real problem is Mr. O’Leary, not the other guy,” insiders said. “He drinks, a lot. This is not the first fight he has been involved in there.”

Sources say that “private investigators have found two or three people who claim they have been beaten up by O’Leary when he has been drinking. Supposedly, they are ready to step forward and tell their stories.

“If they do, that may bring this whole case to a stop.”

Accounts of what happened when Mr. O’Leary, owner of the Irish pub Joxer Daly’s, clashed with a patron, Robert Anthony Singerman, 28 years old, of Los Angeles, have became increasingly muddied during retellings by various parties.

A recurring theme has been that the Councilman threatened to use a firearm on Mr. Singerman, an accusation Mr. O’Leary vehemently denies.

One early version held that Mr. O’Leary was escorting an allegedly reluctant Mr. Singerman from the pub at closing time when the latter decked the Councilman with one boffo punch.

Out cold on the pavement, the Irishman landed in the hospital for a week, undergoing surgery for broken bones around one eye.

Another version suggested that Mr. Singerman challenged Mr. O’Leary to a fight. The Councilman said they should go outside, took the lead, and then Mr. Singerman flattened him with an unanticipated shot before they could square off.

According to today’s account, Mr. Singerman was being led from the pub by a security guard, but was being taunted by the bar owner who was allegedly criticizing his ancestry, whereupon he whirled around and dropped Mr. O’Leary with a single punch.
