Who would have guessed that gardening in Culver City could become a controversial activity?
The 16 plots within the Community Gardens, until now, have been lovingly tended to by ardent gardeners for as long as they wish to engage in soil tilling.
That is changing, effective immediately, to accommodate the years’ long waiting list weighted down with aficionados.
(Meanwhile, the official waiting list is being reopened for a very brief window (Jan. 12 to Feb. 10). Residents will be eligible to join if they live in an apartment, condo, townhouse or other property that does not have a yard. Interested parties should email darrenuhl@culvercity.org )
According to rules and regulations adopted at last evening’s Parks, Recreation and Community Services Commission meeting at City Hall, term limits are to take effect.
Commissioners said they wanted to be realistic. They would not term out all 16 current gardeners at the same time, choosing staggered terms.
Here is how it will work.
Daniel Hernandez, Parks and Recreation director, explains: “Those who have had their plots for 15 years or more will get an additional four years. Those with 15 years or less will get an additional six years.
“After these grandfathered individuals are gone, the natural time limit for a garden plot will be a total of six years.”
