Three years ago this afternoon, veteran National Guardsman Sgt. Scott A. Ansman, who had become a father by his wife two months before, exploded into a rage and battered to death JoAnn Crystal Harris, his pregnant girlfriend, inside the gymnasium of the Culver City National Guard Armory.
Only later did it emerge he was not the father.
But he was the killer, a jury determined 15 months ago, sending Mr. Ansman to prison for life without the possibility of parole.
Locked away at High Desert State Prison in Susanville in northeastern California, the defrocked Mr. Ansman I has been named in a new civil suit for wrongful death and negligence.
The family of 29-year-old Ms. Harris, most prominently her mother, Martha Harris, is suing the California National Guard, the state of California and Mr. Ansman, seeking an unspecified amount of damages.
The case is scheduled to be heard on Sept. 27.
