Re “Why Wolkowitz Has Mixed Feelings About Measure Y

Everybody in the overflow crowd at last Friday’s Measure Y fundraiser at Joxer Daly’s Irish Pub had an opinion about the proposed City Hall deficit-closing half-cent sales tax increase to be decided on Election Day.

Spotted first just inside the door was former School Board member Marla Wolkowitz, who said: “I am here because I don’t want Culver City to become like our neighbors. I want to continue living in Culver City, enjoying all of the services. I don’t think enough people know about Measure Y. That is why my friend Diane Bulgatz is here. Had I not invited her, she would not know about it because she has no idea Culver City is having any problems. If people are on the fence, I say, ‘Do you want your trees trimmed? Do you want your trash picked up every week? Do you want after-school programs to continue?’”

Crystal Alexander,
former city Treasurer:

“Let me tell you an anecdote. My (almost 21-year-old) son and I were out on the patio. We were watching the shuttle Endeavor come over the hill. It was awesome, and it reminds us of how, if we work together, we can accomplish much. That is what Measure Y is, getting each member of the public to continue to support the services we have, all the wonderful things we have created in the last 10 years.”

Ken Roos, husband of former School Board member Jessica Beagles-Roos: “I am supporting Measure Y because I want to keep Culver City the way we like it. I am not sure if enough people understand Measure Y, but I think they will be Election Day. I am reasonably confident it will pass.”

Bill Wynn, President of the Culver City Democratic Club: “This is the kickoff fundraiser for Measure Y at (City Councilman) Mehaul O’Leary’s fine restaurant. And I bring the support of the Democratic Club, which has endorsed Measure Y. I hope they have more functions like this, bringing a lot of people together to talk about it. “

Lee Welinsky, who, once again, may not have been the most seasoned person present even though she is America’s sprightliest 84-year-old: “We need to increase the income. All cities across the country are having problems. So are we. We need more money to make sure our police and fire departments are there when we need them. I have given money to the campaign, and I think others should do the same. We also are taking this to the Los Angeles County Democratic Party, which will support Measure Y and help us, I believe. I am a member, you know. Eight-four, and still driving me own car.”

Prof. Patricia Siever
, School Board member, and Dr. Luther Henderson:

Said he: “The School Board member supports Measure Y, and I support the School Board member, unconditionally.”

Laura Stuart, community activist: “Not enough people know about Measure Y yet. There is a lot of door-knocking to be done yet. I am lending emotional support.”
