This will not be a traditional Monday evening in Council Chambers.

There will be dialogue, a live exchange with the audience.

At a 7 o’clock community meeting – the first in a series of five – City Manager John Nachbar and Chief Financial Officer Jeff Muir will be soliciting opinions on the wisdom of placing a half-cent sales tax increase on the November ballot.

Mr. Muir and Mr. Nachbar will open with a 30-minute presentation, and then field questions from the audience.

Here was City Hall’s announcement of the pending road show:

“In response to the onset of the economic recession in 2008 and continued raids on the city’s revenues by the state, the city has cut millions in expenses, reduced by 71 the number of employee positions, lowered employee compensation, and increased the amount employees pay for retirement. Last Feb. 1, through the dissolution of the Culver City Redevelopment Agency, the state redirected $7.5 million in local funds, erasing the expenditure reductions achieved by the city over the past three years. The City Council is faced with difficult decisions to maintain the fiscal stability of the city while continuing to provide high quality city services, including police, fire, parks and senior services. The City Council will be considering additional cuts along with a proposal to increase the sales tax by .5 percent.”

To make it easier for residents, Mr. Nachbar and Mr. Muir will take their show on the road after tonight:

Saturday, 10 a.m. – El Rincon School.

Monday, June 25, 7 p.m. – Rotunda Room, Vets Auditorium.

Monday, July 9, 7 p.m. – Lin How School.

Monday, July 16, 7 p.m. – Council Chambers.
