Faces will be grim for Monday evening’s 7 o’clock City Council meeting, especially for financially marginal singles and families hoping for housing assistance.
Council will be told that there is a shortfall for the nine programs the Housing Division sponsors, and members will be asked to provide a roadmap for moving toward solvency.
“This will not be the first time we have discussed the loss of low- and moderate-income housing funds and its impact on the city’s ability to fund rental assistance and other programs,” Councilman Andy Weissman said this afternoon.
“Historically, when there was a Redevelopment Agency, it was different.
“We got a tax increment, 20 percent, that went into the low- and moderate-income housing fund, we had the financial resources to not only have a Housing Division but also a variety of housing-related programs,” Mr. Weissman said.
“Those related programs included rental assistance and affordable housing.”
The Councilman said that currently, the majority of funding following state-mandated elimination of redevelopment agencies, “very little is left for housing programs.
“First, we no longer have a Housing Division,” said Mr. Weissman. “It consisted of about a half-dozen individuals who were responsible for the housing programs the city offered.”
