State Assemblymember Holly J. Mitchell (D-Culver City) is inviting all comers to participate in the cancer awareness 24-hour Relay for Life of Baldwin Hills, starting at 9 a.m., Saturday, June 23.
The walkathon will start and end at Yvonne B. Burke Athletic Complex, the baseball field, 5401 S. Fairfax, between Stocker and Slauson.
Relay For Life of Baldwin Hills is a fun event and unusual,”says Ms. Mitchell.
“Our goal is to increase cancer awareness while raising funds for the American Cancer Society’s patient service programs, cancer research, advocacy and community education.
“We will celebrate survivors.
“We will remember loved ones lost to the disease. “And we will learn more about how to fight back against cancer. We need to raise awareness of the importance of cancer prevention, early detection, treatment and patient support.
“No matter who you are,” Ms. Mitchell said, “you can help us.
“Survivors are invited to be our honorary guests in the Survivor’s La, which kicks off Relay For Life. Wearing their purple tee-shirts and medals presented to them by Relay volunteers at the event, survivors take the first lap together. Then they are treated to breakfast. Cancer survivors’ strength and courage help the community see that survivorship is real. We are making progress.”
At 9 Saturday evening, the light of luminaria bags glow in the darkness, lighting the way through the night. Each Luminaria has written on it the name of the loved one lost to cancer or one who is a cancer survivor as well as a personal heartfelt message. These luminaria remind us that we walk for the lives that cancer has touched.
