Re “Meghan, Her-Almost-Honor, Sets a Child-Oriented Goal to be No. 1”

Not surprisingly, the testy topic of fracking is hunkered down near the crest of Vice Mayor Meghan Sahli-Wells’s agenda three days before her City Council colleagues elect her mayor for a year at Monday evening’s 7 o’clock meeting.

Ms. Sahli-Wells has advocated at least a moratorium on the controversial oil drilling method of hydraulic fracturing since it became a nationwide cause several years ago.

Even though some observers concluded the City Council failed to make more than a modest dent in its recent attempt to crack down on drilling within the city limits, the vice mayor contends otherwise.

“We made a very good start that evening,” said Ms. Sahli-Wells who was puzzled by printed reports that said ‘nothing was done.’ We came out of that meeting with five pretty clear objectives, which the city attorney is working on.

“No. 1, we directed her to draft a moratorium on fracking and gravel packing. No. 2, we asked her to continue to monitor the moratoriums in other cities, such as Los Angeles and Carson.

“No. 3, we are going to be checking in regularly with the subcommittee – Councilman (Andy) Weissman and myself. No. 4, we will revise the ordinance as needed in response to the things we find out, both from other cities and from organizations that said they would help us with the language and compare it with the documents of other cities that have passed such laws. Finally, it will come back to the City Council for approval.”
