William Tanner, directing attorney for the Legal Aid Society of Orange County, will be among the expert speakers scheduled for the California Assn. of Legal Document Assistants’ Summer Seminar on Saturday at Culver City’s Courtyard by Marriott hotel.
Mr. Tanner will be offering LDAs information on “How to Prepare Applications for Publication and Applications for Posting,” a requirement whenever a legal matter is filed with the court system.
As a member of the Legal Aid Society of Orange County staff, he will inform CALDA members about the society’s new publication, The Notice, designed to offer a low-cost alternative to the posting requirement.
Other scheduled speakers include Judge Mark A. Juhas, of Los Angeles Superior Court, Bonnie Hough, managing attorney of the Administrative Office of the Courts, Center for Families, Children and the Courts, LDA Vanessa Watson, and Ana Maria Jimenez, from AMJ Probate Services.
LDAs, including members of CALDA, are lower-cost alternatives to paralegals and attorneys and can be hired directly by consumers to provide self-help assistance in legal matters by preparing and processing the necessary legal documents for the court system.
According to Ian Duncan, CALDA president, LDAs “provide invaluable assistance with routine legal tasks, such filing paperwork in cases of divorce, bankruptcies, wills, custody modifications, legal name changes, business incorporations and many other types of form-driven matters.”
The annual CALDA Summer Seminar Services will be hosted by the organization’s Orange County chapter. It is open to all CALDA current and prospective members. More information is available at www.calda.org.
