An outspoken longtime member of the Cultural Affairs Commission who long has sought the scalp of the producer of the Summer Concert in the Courtyard series, went home disappointed again last evening.
Somewhat surprisingly, the City Council declined to take up the advisory Commission’s recommendation to formally seek applicants for the producer’s position for next year.
Like a favorite old hat, or weapon, the Commission member regularly resurrects her request to replace the popular entrepreneur Gary Mandell.
Up to here, she has experienced difficulty in explaining the precision of her beef with Mr. Mandell or the program changes she seeks.
In response to previous Requests for Proposals, as the government calls these pleas, the responses have been thin and easily non-competitive. Some applicants were insufficiently seasoned, and others too expensive for City Hall’s modest budget.
Mr. Mandell’s new series of Thursday night concerts in the Courtyard of City Hall begins in two weeks, July 10, at 7 o’clock.

Representing fire-concerned Culver Crest residents, only one protest was raised against next week’s community Fourth of July fireworks show at West Los Angeles College.
Anti-fracking activists eloquently and repeatedly stated their worries about the oil drilling method as the Council — very preliminarily — laid groundwork for its drilling specific plan. The scheme will not be finalized until late next year.
Finally, the budget was approved for the fiscal year that starts next Tuesday.
