The Los Angeles League of Conservation Voters has endorsed City Councilmember Scott Malsin in his re-election bid.

The organization endorses and supports candidates throughout Los Angeles who are “committed to preserving and protecting the environment…We feel that you are the person best able to uphold these values in your race.”

The only incumbent in the four-person race for two Council seats on April 13, Mr. Malsin said: “I see their endorsement as a reflection of my deep commitment to environmental issues and my record of achievement.

“When I ran for office four years ago, I vowed to make Culver City a more sustainable community. We’ve accomplished more than I thought possible. That’s given me the confidence to set ambitious goals for the future and to know that we can achieve them.”

According to Mr. Malsin’s campaign, Culver City is a nationwide leader in the use of natural gas vehicles, and its fleet recently was named the No. 1 Green Fleet in North America.

Culver City has shifted from biweekly to weekly residential recycling, established a pilot food recycling program, and created incentives for investment in water- and energy-saving building improvements.

Mr. Malsin’s spokespersons say that he has spearheaded the creation of some of the strictest green building standards in Los Angeles County and that he has played a pivotal role in moving the Expo Line forward.

Regarding his goals for a second term, Mr. Malsin cited water conservation, increased recycling and renewable energy as top priorities.

“We need to adopt landscaping standards that reflect and respect our strained water supply,” he said. “We can restructure our refuse rates to significantly increase recycling in commercial and multifamily buildings. We can cost-effectively invest in photo-voltaic systems to reduce energy costs and benefit the environment. Having worked on environmental issues as a Council member for the past four years, I know these are areas where we can quickly make a real and lasting difference.”

“I see environmental protection not only as a moral imperative, but as an economic imperative as well,” Mr. Malsin said. “When we address issues like climate change and explore new ways to deal with our refuse streams and groundwater runoff, we are spurring the industries of tomorrow, creating new jobs and creating a better future for our children.”
