It was estimated this morning that Scott Bixby, rounding out his third month as the interim chief of the Police Dept., will have to wait 60 days more before the City Council votes on a permanent successor to Don Pedersen.

We are learning that the popular Mr. Bixby lives and governs by pithy sayings. Last time he outlined his five Measures of Effectiveness, and this time he introduces his five P’s – pro-activity, professionalism, passion, pride and partnership.

How does Mr. Bixby differ in style from Mr. Pedersen?

“Chief Pedersen was outstanding in networking with entities outside of the department,” Mr. Bixby said. “He was very involved with the L.A. County Chiefs Assn. (which Mr. Pedersen once led), the D.A.’s office, Sacramento, the Medal of Valor. He brought so many valuable contacts to the department.

“My greatest strength,” said Mr. Bixby, “is that I am homegrown and I have been here so long (35 years).I know everybody, and I think people find it easy to talk to me. It is kind of my strength to be approachable, ti be here, to be around for the people.”

Sensing that an uncomfortable parallel might be drawn, Mr. Bixby quickly interjected that “I have the highest regard for Chief Pedersen.”

The prospective next police chief of Culver City said that “I am much more internal.  He was internal, too, but he was very successful at being external, which is important.”
