He needed both two months ago when Dylan Farris, third-year principal of Culver City High School, disclosed he would be leaving in a few days to start a new administrative position in the adjacent El Segundo Unified School District.

Just the right age, fortyish, the right experience, nearly two decades, the right temperament, measured.

“Often,” Mr. LaRose continued, “if you are looking at an interim plan, your only other option is bringing in an outsider for a limited amount of time.”

That is risky, he said, because while “the person may have been talented and experienced in other environments, but it’s not Culver City.”
