Re “We Need to Do a Better Job,  LaRose Says”

Three weeks ago tonight, the July 1 School Board meeting, when the school bond measure died until at least next year, is a day that may live in Culver City infamy as long as the present generation is active.

“I am not going to say I wasn’t disappointed,” said Supt. Dave LaRose.

“But I also recognize and have to accept that it is fair to ask such questions as what’s a parcel tax? What’s a bond measure? What’s the duration? What’s the interest? What’s the implication? What’s the current bond debt?”

In the wake of last Wednesday’s announcement that the popular bond measure is being delayed until at least next year, Mr. LaRose said there is no need to rush a community meeting before the next time the School Board meetings, in a month, Tuesday, Aug.27.

The once red-hot deadline date of Aug. 9 has been turned off.

“To accelerate a meeting just to rehash what already has been done will not serve anybody well,” he said. “That won’t serve the community well. It won’t serve the District well. It won’t serve the School Board well.”

The superintendent preferred, for the present, to look past the 3 to 2 split for postponing the bond campaign and toward a sunnier dimension.

“There are too many things the Board is very much aligned on, the District is very much aligned on, and the community is very much aligned on. As far as when that meeting is to take place, my goal in my communication with the Board is that it take place before our next regularly scheduled meeting.

“It is important we have a work/study session just specific to this subject.

“Hopefully at that time, we will have a lot more information for the Board and the community to review.

“Then we can start taking steps to determine what the next step looks like, what the timeline looks like,  what is it we need to provide, and how do we need to provide it? ”
