Re “LaRose Tabs Farris as Visionary and Collaborator (in a Good Way)”
Supt. Dave LaRose was reflecting on the career trajectory of Dylan Farrris, who stepped down last month in his third year as principal of Culver City High School for a promotion in the El Segundo Unified School District.
“You see somebody who is talented and successful, and who has been successful I his career,” Mr. LaRose said.
“As you know, last year in addition to all the work hew as doing, he made the commitment and the sacrifice to have him complete his doctorate.
“So obviously Dylan is a motivated individual with career plans.”
Mr. Farris left two months into the fall term to accept an offer that was not going to remain open until a more conventional departing time.
“In my counsel with everyone I have worked with,” said Mr. LaRose, “you can’t really have a controlled timing on… You have an interest and a responsibility for yourself, for your long-term career as well as a sense of loyalty and commitment to your current position.
“At the same time, you can’t control the timing.
“The advice I always give,” the superintendent said, “is that you always want to be running to something, not running away from something.
“With Dylan, and sometimes with others, some of the parameters they start to establish are geographical before they think they are ready for that next step. It may require leaving the District. If there had been an opportunity here,” Mr. LaRose said, “then he certainly would not have looked elsewhere.”
