Re “The Cost of the District’s Misjudgment About Culver Park Bungalows

First of two parts

Before leaving for a family outing to Arizona, to deliver his younger daughter to college, Supt. Dave LaRose sat down to talk about the roiled state of the largest of three bungalows that is being salvaged to serve as the new home for Culver Park High School in less than a fortnight, on Tuesday, Sept. 4.

He promised that the Chosen Bungalow, unlike its two now-discarded predecessors which – quietly – flunked even minimum requirements under the previous administration, does and will continue to measure to state health and safety standards.

The LaRose administration is not taking any chances.

Question: At what stage is the bungalow?

“We are making great progress on the teaching and learning space.

“As you know, it has shifted from the previous portables that were known as Nos. 2 and 3.

“We are working with portable No. 1, and we have received all assurances around DSA (Division of the State Architect) approval of health and safety requirements associated with and required for K-12 education.”

How do you achieve that? By verifying periodically with them? Or is a DSA person on-site?

“Great questions. I am new, but I can tell you that is a unique process that does include current involvement with the state agency. We have had conversations with Mr. Craig Rush (principal structural engineer at DSA). We have been having current conversations with him about our current endeavors.

“As far as DSA approval and documentation, part of that is research and historical documents to indicate that we have gone through a process and that space had been deemed appropriate for K-12 teaching and learning.

“Part of it is the historical affirmation that we did have that approval, but also in any of the work we are doing now to include being thoughtful to include everything from architects’ inspectors and representatives for the DSA lens.”
