Born to a life, not just a career, in politics, Karlo Silbiger, fittingly the youngest person ever elected to the School Board, is the first candidate to announce for the November election, 7½ months distant.
Not that a single Culver City voter ever doubted the 33-year-old teacher would vie for a second term.
Four years ago, he also was the first to announce, in April, and now he has beaten that early-bird date.
The terms of Board President Kathy Paspalis, who finished second to Mr. Silbiger in the voting (2,785 to 2,722), and Prof. Patricia Siever (1,646) also expire this year. They, too, are expected to compete for re-election.
The only male on the School Board since Scott Zeidman and Steve Gourley left two years ago, Mr. Silbiger’s first try at hometown electoral politics has been instructive.
While he has been moderately outspoken and smartly assertive, he also has learned that being a player on a five-member team is far different from being a freelancing political personality.
Having been named on nearly six of 10 ballots in 2009, the son of former City Councilman Gary Silbiger naturally is favored to breeze again.
A proud Democrat and a former President of the Culver City Democratic Club, the son of Gary eventually is expected to return the name “Silbiger” to the Council dais.
