Looking for a line on next month’s School Board election?

Karlo Silbiger may be holding several clues.

Before yesterday afternoon’s town hall-style meeting at the School District offices on suggested improvements for the Robert Frost Auditorium, the second-year School Board member offered several glints of wisdom.

“I never bet on local elections,” says Mr. Silbiger, who has been observing races for almost 20 years even though he himself is a scant 29 years old.

“But I usually see certain trends that lead to a successful campaign.

“I look for who is sending out the best mail — for so many people, their only contact with candidates is what they receive in the mail.

“I look to see who is doing the best door-to-door campaign. Who is walking the most? Who has the best interaction with voters at the door?

“Third, who is getting the endorsements that usually matter most to voters? Like the Teachers Union, the Democratic Club, certain elected officials.

“Those three are what you usually need for winning campaigns,” said Mr. Silbiger.

Since he is backing incumbent/colleague Scott Zeidman and Nancy Goldberg for the two available seats on the Board, are the above signposts foreshadowing a Zeidman-Goldberg victory?

No, said Mr. Silbiger.

“I am not shy, and if I believed something, I would tell you. But I don’t. I will not put any kind of money on this race.”

Educator Laura Chardiet is the third top tier candidate.

No formal polling has been done on the race. Among those observing the campaign undulations, all three are given an equal chance of finishing first, second or out of the money.
