The sweet, addicting sounds of Buenos Aires will be wafting through the Downtown air this evening when producer Gary Mandell, at least figuratively, brings down his baton at 7 o’clock for the third week of the Summer Music Festival in the Courtyard of City Hall.
Los Pinguos (The Penguins), natives of Buenos Aires who play Latin rhythms, salsa, flamenco, reggae, rumba and Argentine rock, form the marquee attraction, along with the Gonzalo Bergara Quartet, a jazz ensemble.
Mr. Bergara also is from Buenos Aires. Called the Best Jazz Group in Los Angeles by Los Angeles magazine, the quartet fuses elements of Buenos Aires sounds with traditional jazz and the music of Django Reinhardt, which Culver City audiences know.
Says Mr. Mandell of Los Pinguos: “Some of their fans think of them as the ‘South American Beatles.’ They are a hot Argentine folk groove band. Their music crosses most boundaries, and they are one of L.A.’s hottest groups.”
