Re “The Last Time She Saw Her Son, in a Courtroom”

Marilyn Ansman, the mother of convicted killer Scott Ansman, said that five years after being sent to prison for life, her son “is in good spirits. He keeps working on his paperwork” to prove his innocence.

Mr. Ansman is working as his own attorney because, says his ailing 72-year-old mother, “we can’t afford one.”

“It has been a rough go for Scott,” said Mrs. Ansman. In May 2009, her son was found guilty of murdering his pregnant girlfriend in August 2007 at the Culver City Armory, just feet away from where the Fiesta La Ballona celebration was to begin a couple hours later.

“His wife (the mother of his three young children) has divorced him, and I have no idea where her and the kids are. That bothers me. It just has been a terrible tragedy.”

Mrs. Ansman has not been able to afford a trip to the Central Valley prison to see her son since he was convicted and sentenced 5½ years ago.

Mother and son speak by telephone twice a week. “He sounds good,” Mrs. Ansman said. “Seems to be keeping busy.

“About 18 other guys in the same state prison were in the military. They have formed a little group.”
