[img]1294|right|Mr. Armenta||no_popup[/img]Former Mayor Chris Armenta today formally announced his candidacy for the state Assembly seat presently held by Holly Mitchell (D-Culver City).
In a special election on Sept. 17, Ms. Mitchell is heavily favored to win the state Senate office recently vacated by Curren D. Price Jr., after he was elected on May 21 to represent the 9th District in South Los Angeles on the Los Angeles City Council.
Mr. Armenta’s candidacy is based on the assumption Ms. Mitchell moves on to the Senate.
Mr. Armenta has been a resident of Culver City for 35 years. Previously, he served as the City Clerk of Culver City, on the City Council as well as mayor for 10 consecutive years, through 2012.
Additionally, Mr. Armenta has worked for state and federal government agencies in the fields of accounting and auditing for 28 years. He has held highly technical leadership positions as a senior auditor and business taxes specialist. In 2010, he was appointed to the California Tax Credit Allocation Committee by then-Assembly Speaker Karen Bass (D-Culver City).
For the past three years, Mr. Armenta has worked on legislation and policy initiatives as the deputy advisor to the chairman of the state Board of Equalization Jerome E. Horton, who is responsible for overseeing the annual collection of $53 billion in taxes and fees for the state.
“I have lived most of my life in the 54th Assembly District,” Mr. Armenta said, “and I care deeply about this community.”
As a member of the Assembly, Mr. Armenta said his goals would be to improvethe state of education, jobs, the economy, healthcare, the environment and public safety.
Culver City is in the middle of the 54th Assembly District, which includes the Crenshaw District, UCLA, Cheviot Hills, Mar Vista, the Fairfax District and parts of South Los Angeles.
