After 15 weeks of coding, web design, leadership and team building, the 28 teens in URBAN Teens eXploring Technology (URBAN TxT) will be ready to present their tech creations that tackle community problems.
URBAN TxT, the only technology nonprofit organization in South Los Angeles, will hold its end-of-program event on Saturday, 12 noon to 3, at USC. It is free and open to the public. Individuals, families, and tech junkies alike encouraged to attend, registration and lunch will start at 11.
“In URBAN TxT, our teens use coding to learn business development, leadership, and public speaking,” said founder Oscar Menjivar. “During our one-of-a-kind summer coding academy, our teens put all those skills together to create web and mobile products that improve our community. Needless to say they are excited to pitch.”
One of the products featured on URBAN TxT’s Demo Day will be SAT Fighters, an Android app developed by 17-year-old Alejandro, 16-year-old Xavier, 15-year-old Lester, and 13-year old Favian. “We realized students did not have any fun, interactive ways to study for the SAT, especially the vocabulary section,” explained Alejandro, project manager for his team. “Our app is a ninja fighting game that fixes that problem.”
Guests in attendance should look forward to unique and interesting products, including a Facebook app that informs teens about positive news in their communities through short, dynamic articles, a web app that helps South Los Angeles athletes find safe, challenging running routes and other objectives.
“I hope people from all parts of Los Angeles come to Demo Day,” said Jesus, a second-year teen in URBAN TxT. “We’ve found ways to use technology to improve our city. We want to share the results of our hard work with everyone.”
