Senior citizens of Culver City, 65 years old and older, can vote “yes” on Measure EE, the parcel tax, on Nov. 3, without being taxed.

If it passes, Measure EE will raise an estimated $1.2 million per year for Culver City public schools over the next five years.

Seniors can exempt themselves from paying the $96annual tax on their primary residence by completing and submitting a short application.

To apply for the exemption, seniors will need to complete an application by providing their name, address, telephone number and birth date.

To demonstrate that they qualify, an applicant must provide a copy of a document demonstrating his/her age (like a driver's license, passport, birth certificate or California Identification), proof of property ownership (a copy of the property tax bill), and proof of residency (a copy of an electric or gas bill).

Once the application is submitted, the the senior will automatically be exempted from having to pay the parcel tax.

To ensure an exemption, seniors should apply as soon as possible.

Those who do not make a timely application for the first year and/or those who become eligible later during the five-year duration of the parcel tax will be able to apply for the exemption any subsequent year.

“That sounds very reasonable to me,” says Mim Shapiro, a senior who has lived in Blair Hills since 1956.

If Measure EE passes by the required 2/3 vote, Senior Exemption forms will be made available at a variety of locations around town, including at the School District offices, 4034 Irving Pl., or online at the School District's website (www ccusd.org).
